The Three Fish

Once upon a time, in a peaceful pond, there lived three fish with very unique names: Think-Ahead, Quick-Thinking, and Go-With-The-Flow. They were good friends and shared the pond with many other fish families.

One sunny afternoon, as the three fish swam near the surface, they overheard some fishermen talking. “This pond is full of big fish!” one fisherman said excitedly. “Let’s come back tomorrow morning with our nets and catch them all!”

Hearing this, Think-Ahead immediately swam to the other fish. “Everyone! The fishermen are coming tomorrow with nets to catch us. We need to leave this pond right away and find a safer place. Let’s not wait until it’s too late!”

Quick-Thinking agreed. “Think-Ahead is right. Staying here is too risky. I’ll pack up my family and follow you to another pond.”

But Go-With-The-Flow just laughed. “Why are you so scared? This pond has been our home forever, and nothing bad has ever happened. Those fishermen might not even come back! Besides, we can’t escape our fate. If it’s time to go, then so be it. I’m staying here, and anyone who agrees with me can stay too.”

Some fish were unsure, but by the evening, Think-Ahead, Quick-Thinking, and their families had found a small stream leading to another pond. They left quietly, along with some other fish who decided it was better to be safe.

The next morning, just as the fishermen had planned, they came back with their nets. They threw their nets into the pond and caught every single fish that had stayed behind, including Go-With-The-Flow and his family. Not a single fish escaped.

But in the new pond, Think-Ahead, Quick-Thinking, and their families swam happily, safe and sound.

Moral Lessons of the Story:

When you see danger ahead, don’t wait—act quickly and wisely. Being brave isn’t about ignoring danger, but about making the right choices to stay safe.

Learn More About the Story

The Story of the Three Fish originates from ancient Indian fables, specifically the Panchatantra. These tales were written thousands of years ago to teach moral lessons and practical wisdom through simple stories about animals.

At Mini Bedtime Stories, we adapted the story to make it easier for young children to understand and enjoy. The original names of the fish, Anagatavidhata (one who plans ahead), Pratyutpannamati (one who thinks on their feet), and Yadbhavishya (one who lives in the moment), along with parts of the language, were complex. We simplified them while keeping the core moral intact.

  • The fish were given simpler names: Think-Ahead, Quick-Thinking, and Go-With-The-Flow, which reflect their personalities.
  • The language was made conversational and story-like to engage younger readers.
  • The moral was framed in a way that children can easily understand and relate to: acting wisely and quickly when facing danger.
